OVERVIEW

Welcome to the City of Petersburg Office of Volunteerism and Community Engagement! Volunteers are vital to the City of Petersburg and Volunteerism is an essential community resource which promotes social inclusion and active citizenship. There are many ways to get involved, so coupled with your skills, talents, interest and motivation to volunteer - we are going to be a great team!

Volunteer Application

The Petersburg Ambassadors Program is where individuals will engage in a vibrant culture of volunteerism as a Collegiate Ambassador, Eco-Friendly Ambassador, General Ambassador, High School Ambassador and Seasoned Ambassador.

Collegiate Ambassador - College students with an interest and drive to develop their leadership skills, enhance resume, gain experience while providing valuable service to the City of Petersburg thru internships, field work and community service work. Duration of time is determined by the student or university/college.

Eco-Friendly Ambassador - Volunteers age 18/over with eco-friendly skills, interest in preserving and protecting the environment. Duration of time commitment is determined by the Go-Green Ambassador.

General Ambassador - Volunteers age 18/over, skills, talents and posses a motivation to volunteer, dependable, reliable. If you have a community service requirement, you must present proper documentation and contact information.

High School Ambassador - Students must be enrolled in Petersburg Public Schools/Appomattox Regional Governors School, 15 years and over. Must complete a minimum of 20 Community Service Hours/duration of time is based on the High School Ambassador commitment an for school requirement. Students will develop leadership skills, Public Speaking Experience, resume building and valuable community service experience.

Seasoned Ambassador - Volunteers age 50/over that possess motivation and willingness to volunteer, dependable and reliable, Duration of time commitment is determined by the Seasoned Ambassador.

Community Partner Program - Community Partners play a vital role as it relates to recruiting volunteers to the Petersburg Ambassadors Program. Community Partners will share, assist with the development of a partnership and align efforts to reflect a more cohesive volunteer effort between city, Community Partners and Ambassadors. Also, this opportunity will allow the development and implementation of a community calendar for Community Partners.

ONE TIME EVENTS: 

Martin Luther King Day - Sponsored by Tabernacle Baptist Church & City of Petersburg, January 21, 2019, Tabernacle Baptist Church, Target group: High School and College Students will attend service, participate in seminars and perform a community service project, Time: 9:00-2:00PM, Volunteer Ambassadors needed:  Assist with registration, meal distribution and assist with service project at Peabody Middle School. 

Black History Festival - Sponsored by the City of Petersburg, February 23, 2019, Petersburg High School Target Group: Families, Vendors will be on site (food and merchandise vendors), entertainment10:00-8:00PM, Volunteer Ambassadors needed: Assist with set up and break down, serve as ushers, operate check in table, assist with vendor set up, stage assistance and photographers. 

Donamatrix Day at the Petersburg Sports Complex - Hometown Fitness Festival hosted by Celebrity Fitness Trainer Don Brooks, April 6, 2019,  9:00AM-5:00P, Fitness Activities, Work Outs, Karate, Health Food Vendors, Educational Exhibits. Volunteer Ambassadors needed: Event Staff, Host/Hostesses, Registration table,  Set Up Clean Up.

Spring City Wide Clean Up - Block by Block - It's time to clean our neighborhoods, Saturday, May 4, 2019 Block by Block and City Corridors, Volunteer Ambassadors needed: We need residents, the faith based community, business community and civic/social groups to Assist with Clean up

Youth Summer Recreation Program - June 20 - August 15, 2019, Volunteer Ambassadors: Assist as Bus Monitors, Field Trip Chaperones, Assist with camp activities, Assist with pool front desk operations or provide a venue for youth to engage in weekly or monthly recreation enrichment programs. 

Trunk-A-Treat Event at the Petersburg Sports Complex - Volunteer Ambassadors: organizations provide a car, truck or van to distribute candy to children ages 1 thru 12 as means to provide a safe environment for our youth. October 31, 2019, 500PM-7:30PM

City Holiday Decorations - November 18 - November 26, 2019, Volunteer Ambassadors: Assist with decorating the City of Petersburg for the Holiday Season 

Annual Tree Lighting - This event will be held at the Union Train Station on Thursday, December 5, 2019, 6:00-9:00PM, Volunteer Ambassadors are needed to assist with Santa's Workshop, set up and break down

City of Petersburg Christmas Parade - will be held Saturday, December 7, 2019, 3:00PM-5:00PM. Volunteer Ambassadors will serve as parade assistants (walk with parade units to ensure safety precautions are used, assist with Judges Stand, Assist with set up and break down). 

ONGOING VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Playground/Park Clean Up - Volunteer Ambassadors: Mulching, painting equipment and removal of trash, Sites: Lee Park, Oakhurst Playground, McKenzie Street Playground, Poplar Lawn Park, Farmer Street Playground, School Playground sites, Albert Jones Football Field and Cameron Field.

Volunteer Ambassadors Coaches - Baseball/Basketball Coaches, Basketball Season (January thru March), Baseball Season (April - June), Ages 4 thru 15, Volunteer Coaches: Ages 18 & Over

Senior Citizens Programs - Volunteer Ambassadors needed: to Assist with Senior Program sponsored by the City of Petersburg in collaboration with Tabernacle Baptist Church, Monday thru Thursday, 9:00-2:00PM

Summer Youth Recreation Program - Volunteer Ambassadors: Assist with lunch, provide educational health seminars, assist with games, assist with front desk operations.  Volunteer as chaperones for Senior Field Trips.
