The Petersburg Department of Fire, Rescue, and Emergency Services is proud to announce Captain Jerren Lucas Sr. as the 2024 Firefighter of the Year. Chief Wayne Hoover made the announcement, commending Captain Lucas for his unparalleled dedication to the Department and the Petersburg community.
“In every generation, there are individuals who leave a mark that becomes part of the City’s foundation,” said Chief Hoover. “For Petersburg, that is Captain Lucas, a man whose roots run as deep as his love for the people he serves.”
Raised in Petersburg, Captain Lucas represents a lifelong commitment to the City. As Captain of Engine 2, B Shift, stationed at 50 S. Market Street, his leadership and compassion serve as a unifying force. Within the Department, Captain Lucas is an inspiration. Recruits leave his training sessions with improved skills and renewed confidence. “Every recruit has trained with Captain Lucas,” said Chief Hoover. “He helps them see their strengths and brings out their potential, not just as firefighters but as individuals.”
Captain Lucas extended his influence through his storytelling series, “Views from the Jumpseat,” providing the community with an inside look into the lives and sacrifices of firefighters.
Beyond his firefighting duties, Captain Lucas mentors youth through school events and community gatherings. His efforts ensure that children in Petersburg feel valued, whether by distributing coats, providing shoes, or offering words of encouragement and high-fives. “We want the community to know that we are not just here when your house is on fire,” explained Captain Lucas. “We’re here for people year-round.”
A dedicated husband and father, Captain Lucas credits his family as his driving force. His personal and professional life is guided by a commitment to building a legacy that inspires future generations in Petersburg to dream boldly and walk with purpose.
