Winter Storm Warning in Effect for our Area
A winter storm warning is in effect for our area. Per the National Weather Service (NWS), travel will likely become extremely dangerous; plan now to avoid travel during the storm.
To receive winter weather alerts, visit 511.VDOT.Virginia.Gov. For up-to-date winter weather information, visit the Virginia Department of Emergency Management’s (VDEM) January 2026 Winter Weather website and the NWS Wakefield website.
Please follow the safety precautions issued by VDEM and NWS:
- Charge your electronic devices before the storm starts.
- Gather back up batteries, flashlights, extra blankets, and warm clothes, and put them in an easily accessible area in your home.
- Check your Carbon Monoxide Detector batteries.
- Remove garden hoses from outdoor faucets and make sure you know where your water shut off is in case of frozen pipes.
- Make sure your car has at least a half tank of gas.
- Practice caution when using a space heater to reduce the risk of fire.
- Make sure to use generators in an outdoor location with adequate ventilation.
- Bring Pets into a warm place and out of the storm and severe cold.
City of Petersburg will extend the operating hours of the Comfort Station. Beginning Saturday, January 24, at 6:00 pm, the City’s Comfort Station will extend its hours and remain open continuously through Monday morning. Following the storm, the Comfort Station will resume its normal operating hours, Monday through Saturday, from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. Alcoholic beverages, smoking, and hard foods are not permitted in the facility. Service animals are allowed but must be properly maintained at all times. Any violation of these rules or other policies may result in removal from the facility. The Comfort Station is located at Petersburg Area Transit, 100 W. Washington Street. Access to the Comfort Station is available through the doors on the Operations side, where buses board.
Citizens should report poor road conditions, fallen trees blocking roads, or general concerns, to the Petersburg Bureau of Police NON-EMERGENCY LINE at (804) 732-4222.
Any power outages should be reported to Dominion Energy at 1-866-366-4357.
