Environmental Sustainability Management System - ISO 14001 Standard

Petersburg is one of ten localities nationwide to receive a $19,500 scholarship from Virginia Tech, for International City Management Association members to be used for advanced environmental training. With the scholarship, Petersburg had named a six- member ESMS team.  Team members attended four workshops at Virginia Tech's Center for Organizational and Technological Advancement.

The workshops are designed to improve management processes and procedures, along with providing tools to analyze, control and reduce the environmental impact of activities, products and services ( ESMS Brochure ).  "Being selected by the Virginia Tech ESMS Institute is a great honor.  This is an excellent opportunity for staff to better understand and improve our processes and commitment to improving the environment.” says City Manager and ICMA member, William E. Johnson, III.

ESMS members include:
• William E. Johnson, III, City Manager
• Steven Hicks, Director of Public Works
• Darryl Walker, Stormwater Manager
• Reggie Lantz, General Manager of Facilities
• Bill Riggleman, Engineer and Construction Manager
• Amanda Phillips, Acting General Manager of Street Operations

Virginia Tech ESMS instructors visited the City to review upcoming training and conduct a baseline environmental review. The City’s ESMS project used Facility Management Custodial Services as a baseline to measure environmental impacts and increase its operating efficiency. The ESMS team goal is to receive ISO 14001 Certification. ISO 14001 is an international standard for environmental management systems.
