Ferndale Park (also known as Appomattox Riverside Park) is a popular destination for bird-watching, canoeing, fishing, and whitewater rafting. It is located just outside the border of Petersburg in Dinwiddie County. It was donated to the city by Dominion Energy in the 1970s. Canoeist/kayakers can enjoy a shuttle-free 3 mile loop by paddling up the canal and back down the river (Class II-III whitewater). Amenities: 1.5 mile canal trail, a section of the Appomattox River Trail, playground, water and trail access, canal kayak launch (gravel), picnic shelters, and a fishing pier and natural shoreline.
