Public Trees
On June 17, 2025, City Council voted to adopt the Strategic Tree Canopy Plan which outlines the City's goals for the planting and preservation of trees.
In accordance with the Strategic Tree Canopy Plan, new regulations were adopted for the protection and planting of trees within the City's right-of-way. Those regulations can be viewed here.
If you are interested in planting, removing, or pruning a tree in the City's right-of-way, the following permit applications can be completed and submitted to jlester@petersburg-va.org for review:

Landscaping Standards for Private Development
The City has also adopted additional landscaping regulations which apply to the development of private sites, including requirements for plantings within off-street parking areas and minimum overall canopy coverage site-wide. Those regulations can be viewed here.
