Trash and Recycling

May 15, 2020 Update: 

Effective Monday, May 18, residential curbside bulky and yard waste collections will resume. Regular weekly trash and recycling collection services will continue as normal. 

Regular household garbage must be placed in the container for collection and set out by 7am on collection day.

Place any extra bags, bulky waste, and yard waste next to trash carts on the curb on your regular collection day by 7am.

Bulky waste includes large appliances, furniture or other waste material that cannot be placed in the Cart due to size. Bulky Waste does not include Construction Waste or Hazardous Waste, which is not collected, nor allowed to be placed in the cart or at the curb.

Yard Waste must be bundled and tied together not exceeding 4 feet in length or 75 pounds and grass clippings and leaves must be bagged and placed next to the Cart.

In Petersburg, bulky and yard waste is limited to an amount that does not exceed 10 cubic yards. The pile cannot exceed 9 feet long by 9 feet wide and 3 feet high.

April 20, 2020 Update

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, residential curbside collection of bulky waste and yard waste are suspended in the cities of Colonial Heights, Hopewell, and Petersburg, beginning April 20, 2020 until further notice. 

CVWMA is instituting this change to minimize the potential for exposure to the COVID-19 virus for the workers collecting trash.  

Regular weekly trash and recycling collection services will continue as normal. Regular household garbage must be placed in the container for collection and set out by 7am on collection day. 


As an alternative, residents can take bulky items and yard waste to:

Tri-City Regional Transfer Station, 390 Industrial Drive, Petersburg, off Puddleduck Rd – Open to all residents @ no charge on the following days:

Petersburg Residents ONLY on Tuesdays, Thursday and Fridays between 7am and 4pm

  • Residents must show proof of residency with valid driver’s license AND statement such as utility bill, mortgage statement etc. and the addresses must match

  • There is a TWO mattress limit per address

  • A fee will be charged for Construction and Demolition Debris

  • No Tires or Hazardous Waste

  • Residents will be responsible for unloading their material

CVWMA operations are continuing, with a very limited staff physically in the office, most employees working remotely.
